You don't need a new TV or monitor to play GTA VI — but if yours is due for an upgrade anyway, here's what actually matters and two picks depending on where you're playing.
What actually matters
- HDMI 2.1. This is the one non-negotiable spec — it's what unlocks 4K at 120Hz on PS5 and Xbox Series X. A TV without it caps you at 4K/60 or 1080p/120, no matter what else it does well.
- VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). Smooths out frame-rate dips instead of showing tearing or stutter — most noticeable in a dense open-world game like GTA VI.
- Refresh rate. 120Hz is the real target on console; higher numbers on monitors (144Hz, 160Hz+) mostly matter if you're also gaming on PC.
- Input lag. Look for a dedicated "Game Mode" — it strips out the processing that adds visible delay between button press and on-screen action.
If you're playing on a TV
A 55" 4K set with HDMI 2.1, VRR, and a proper game mode covers console play well without overspending on features you won't use for gaming.

If you're playing on a desk / PC setup
A dedicated gaming monitor gets you higher refresh rates and lower input lag than most TVs, plus a dual-mode option to trade resolution for frame rate depending on what you're playing.
