This isn't a hype list. It's the small stuff people find out about the hard way on launch day — usually while a 100GB+ download sits at 40% and the store is closed. Sort these before November 12, when preloading opens.

1. Enough free storage — with room to spare

Large open-world launches routinely need well over 100GB, and day-one patches add more on top of the base install. Check your console's free space now, not the week of launch. If you're tight, an external or expansion drive is worth buying early — prices tend to creep up right before major releases.

2. A stable, fast internet connection

Preloading a large file over a slow or congested connection during launch week is its own kind of pain. If your connection has been flaky, this is the month to deal with it — a wired connection during the preload window will save real time over Wi-Fi.

3. An active subscription, if you're playing online

Online multiplayer on both PS5 and Xbox requires an active PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold/Game Pass subscription. Check your renewal date now so it doesn't lapse mid-launch-week.

4. A headset that won't die on you mid-session

Open-world games run long. A headset that's uncomfortable after 90 minutes, or one with a battery that doesn't last a session, becomes a real annoyance fast. If yours is already on its way out, replace it before launch rather than during it.

5. Realistic expectations for launch-day servers

Major online launches strain servers, no matter how much a studio prepares. Go in expecting some early friction with online features specifically — the single-player campaign is unaffected by this. It's not a reason to worry, just a reason not to plan your first night entirely around online play.
